Manhattan, I Love Panzerotti straight three
The growing chainlet and Manhattan’s only panzerotteria, I Love Panzerotti, is opening its third and largest store yet, a 20-seat eatery in the East Village, serving panzerotti and wood fired brick oven Neapolitan pizza.
The crescent-shaped, piping-hot turnover hailing from Italy’s laid-back, beachy-paradise South, is picking up steam in Manhattan.
Filled with cheese, tomato sauce, and toppings, panzerotti became available and grew in popularity in the past year first in Greenwich Village in April, in the Gansevoort Market in the Meatpacking District in September and most recently in the East Village today.
Crowdsourced by around 170 friends in Italy, the I Love Panzerotti stores are charged by their investors with a mission of feeding not only New Yorkers. Since their opening, the brand has operated in partnership with Mary’s Meals, an international charity working towards ending child hunger globally. Donating a portion of every panzerotto purchased to the international NGO, in just eight months I Love Panzerotti has already provided over 16,000 nutritious meals to children in need. This initiative has had such an echo that the Vatican invited I Love Panzerotti to present a testimony in at a conference in Rome in December about sustainable human development.
The new location has white walls, raw woods and augmented reality projections showing in real-time, photos taken inside the store and posted to Instagram, along with videos of where and how the ingredients are produced in Italy and of the local Apulian environment.
The eatery’s menu – perfect for meat-eaters, vegetarians and vegans alike – includes 18 panzerotti available made to order either fried or oven baked, from the Pepperoni with real soppressata, mozzarella and tomato sauce to ‘Nduja, a very spicy salami spread with mozzarella, to “Pesto” with pesto, mozzarella and pecorino to a sweet “Smores” with Nutella, peanut butter, graham crackers, and marshmallow. Also featured on the menu are eight 12” Neapolitan pizzas made in the same wonderful, wood fired brick oven that was used by the space’s last tenant Tramonti Pizza, currently expanding to a larger space. Pizzas include the “Tartufo” with truffle puree, fresh mozzarella, arugula and pecorino and the “Montanara” with fresh mozzarella, gorgonzola, sausage and walnuts.
I Love Panzerotti’s owner Angelo Magni says he chose panzerotti for his first venture in the United States because they are an important symbol of the Southern lifestyle he loves.
“The healthy balance of the challenges of life along with its simple pleasures is called ‘Vita Sana.’ We do that well in Italy, and especially in the South. So, when Italians come into our shop they smile because this food we serve brings back nostalgia of childhood, simpler times, happy memories, and the mother country”, explains Magni.
