Euro 2020, “Pizza a gir” arrives in New York
To celebrate Italy’s July 11th victory of the Euro 2020 Soccer Tournament, one of the most important soccer events of the year and coveted titles, Ciro Iovine, owner and chef of song E Napule Pizzeria & Trattoria in 146 West Houston St, West Village New York, created a special new pizza called “Pizza a gir’” that will be available only for a limited time.
The name comes from the signature kick (tiro a giro, “tir’ a gir’” in Neapolitan dialect) of one of the most important players of the team, Lorenzo Insigne, that plays with Napoli team in Italy and is originally from that city, just like the Chef himself.
Throughout the whole competition, this particular kick, (that curves the ball making it particularly difficult for the goalkeeper to catch, has become a cultural phenomenon in Italy, with Insigne scoring with it in the first match against Turkey and then again against Belgium in the quarter-final. Several videos in which people invoke the tir a gir’ are now viral in Italy.
The pizza recreates the Italian flag with cream of datterini tomatoes from Azienda Carbone, cream of parmigiano cheese “vacca rossa” aged 24 months and basil pesto.
A few days ago, Alessandro Del Piero former Juventus and Italy’s national team player, and currently soccer commentator for ESPN had dinner at Song E Napule, and celebrated with the staff the victory in the semifinal against Spain.
The Italian community in NYC celebrated the victory the whole day in front of Song E Napule Pizzeria & Trattoria and many photos and videos were featured on US national medias.
